Ingredients
  

Potato Layers

  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced Russet or Yukon Gold are best
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can substitute with low-fat milk for a healthier version
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or gruyere) Feel free to experiment with different cheeses

Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Add more for a stronger garlic flavor
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter Dotted on top before baking
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme (optional) Half sprinkled in layers and half as garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
  • Sprinkle half of the onions, garlic, and cheese over the potatoes.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and half of the thyme if using.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the top.
  • Dot with butter.

Baking

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven to maintain texture.
