Ingredients

Tofu Preparation

  • 4 pieces extra firm or hard tofu, cut into 10 x 5 x 1.5cm slices (4 x 2 x 0.6") 100g / 3.5oz each
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Coating Mixture

  • 2 tbsp flour, plain/all-purpose
  • 1 piece egg, lightly whisked
  • 4 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • 4 tbsp black sesame seeds

Cooking Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp canola/vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely sliced optional
  • 1 piece green onion, finely sliced for garnish

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce, preferably Japanese all-purpose
  • 2 tbsp mirin, preferably Japanese
  • 2 tbsp cooking sake, preferably Japanese
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

Sesame Coating

  • Pat tofu dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Place flour, egg, and sesame seeds in separate shallow bowls.
  • Press tofu into flour, shake off excess, dip in egg, and coat with sesame seeds.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat, add garlic, and cook until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Increase heat to medium-high. Cook tofu for 1 1/2 minutes on each side until crispy, searing the edges as well.
  • Remove tofu to a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Lower heat, add teriyaki sauce ingredients, and simmer for 1 minute until thickened.
  • Place tofu on a plate, drizzle with teriyaki sauce, and top with crispy garlic and green onion.

Notes

Press tofu to remove excess moisture for a crispier crust. Don't skip the garlic for added flavor. For extra crunch, use a mix of seeds or add breadcrumbs to the coating.
