Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water Ensure the water is warm but not hot.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast Ensure that the yeast is fresh.
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Filling & Topping

  • 10-12 ounces mozzarella cheese, cut into sticks You can experiment with different cheese fillings.
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten For brushing on pretzels.
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling Sprinkle before baking.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and salt in warm water. Add the yeast and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add the flour and melted butter to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).

Forming Pretzels

  • Divide the dough into pieces, flatten them, and place mozzarella sticks in the center.
  • Roll the dough around the cheese and shape into pretzel forms.

Cooking

  • Boil water with baking soda in a large pot; dip pretzels in the water for 30 seconds.
  • Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Enjoy warm!

Notes

Serve with marinara sauce, nacho cheese, mustard, or ranch dressing. For storage, keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
