Tortilla Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening or lard You can use either vegetable shortening or lard.
  • 3/4 cup water Use warm water for better dough consistency.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until well combined.
  • Add 1/4 cup of vegetable shortening or lard to the flour mixture, and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until it becomes crumbly.
  • Slowly pour in 3/4 cup of water while mixing, until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth.
  • Divide the dough into small balls, approximately the size of a golf ball, and let them rest for 30 minutes covered with a cloth.

Cooking

  • After resting, roll each ball into a thin circle on a floured surface.
  • Heat a hot, ungreased skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side until lightly browned and cooked through.
  • Keep the cooked tortillas warm by placing them in a cloth until you’re ready to serve.

Notes

To store, stack tortillas and wrap tightly in plastic wrap or an airtight container. They can be left at room temperature for a couple of days or refrigerated for up to a week. Freeze them by placing layers of parchment paper between tortillas.
