Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar To help caramelize the onions faster
  • 1 lb beef stew meat or thinly sliced sirloin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1 tablespoon flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 12 oz wide egg noodles
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring often, until they become caramelized, about 20–25 minutes.
  • Sprinkle in the sugar to help the onions caramelize faster.
  • Once the onions are ready, push them to the side of the pan and add the beef.
  • Season the beef with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Sear the beef until it is browned on all sides.

Cooking

  • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and the can of French onion soup.
  • If you like a thicker sauce, mix the flour with a bit of water and add it to the mixture.
  • Cover and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the beef is tender.

Noodles

  • While the beef is cooking, prepare the egg noodles according to the package instructions.
  • Drain the noodles and set them aside.
  • Add the cooked noodles to the beef and onion mixture and stir to combine.
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top and cover the pot. Let it sit off heat for 2–3 minutes until the cheese melts.

Serving

  • Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.

Notes

For variations, replace beef with mushrooms for a vegetarian option or add vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for extra nutrition. You can also freeze the dish; it can last up to 3 months.
