Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup sliced green bell peppers or jalapeños
  • to taste pepperoni slices
  • to taste additional shredded mozzarella
  • to taste extra pepperoni and vegetables for garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked meat, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese (if using), mushrooms, green bell peppers or jalapeños, and pepperoni slices. Mix well.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a deep-dish pizza pan or cast-iron skillet.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out to fit the pan. Press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the pan, creating a thick crust.
  • Pour the filling mixture into the crust, spreading it evenly.
  • Top with additional shredded mozzarella and any extra pepperoni or vegetables you desire.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot.

Notes

Serve hot with a side of extra pizza sauce for dipping and some fresh salad for a complete meal. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat at 350°F until warmed through.
