Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1.5 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled Ensure butter is not too hot.
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Mix-ins

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • to taste flaky sea salt Optional, for sprinkling on top.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until smooth. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Transfer the dough to the prepared baking pan and press into an even layer. Optionally sprinkle the top with flaky sea salt.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-34 minutes or until lightly browned on the sides. Use a toothpick to test for doneness.
  • Allow the bars to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least an hour before cutting into squares.

Storing

  • Cover and store leftover bars at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon to the dry ingredients. You can customize these bars with different types of chocolate or nuts.
