Main Ingredients

  • 600 g beef mince (ground beef) (at least 20% fat)
  • 1.2 kg beef mince (for double cheeseburgers)
  • 1/8 tsp salt Per burger
  • 1/8 tsp pepper Per burger
  • 2-3 tbsp canola oil
  • 4 pieces soft burger buns or rolls (around 10 cm/4" wide)
  • 4-8 slices burger cheese (American or other cheese of choice)
  • 8 leaves cos/romaine lettuce (torn or shredded)
  • 2 large tomatoes (cut into eight 7 mm/ 1/4" slices)
  • 1 piece red onion (finely sliced into rings)
  • 2 large gherkins (finely sliced)
  • 1 recipe Special Burger Sauce (creamy orangey/pink one, quick no cook)
  • to taste Tomato chutney for burgers
  • to taste Ketchup
  • to taste Mustard
  • optional French fries (but highly recommended!)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Divide the beef into 4 equal portions, or 8 for double cheeseburgers. Roll each portion into a ball and then press down into round patties, slightly larger than your bun (12 cm / 4.7" wide, 1 cm / 0.4" thick).
  • Get all your burger ingredients ready. Avoid salting the meat until just before cooking to prevent toughness.

Cooking

  • Preheat the grill to high. Place the buns cut face up and toast them for 3 to 5 minutes until light golden.
  • Season one side of the patties with half the salt and pepper. Flip and press a dent into each patty to prevent doming while cooking.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a cast iron skillet over high heat. Cook the patties for 1.5 minutes, press gently, then flip and top with cheese, cooking for another 1.5 minutes. Let patties rest for 3 minutes.

Assembly

  • Spread your chosen sauce on the bun. Layer lettuce, tomato, patties, gherkins, onion, and more sauce on the lid. Top it off with the other half of the bun.

Serving

  • Enjoy your cheeseburgers hot, fresh off the grill or stovetop, paired with crispy French fries, onion rings, or a simple side salad.

Notes

Store leftover cheeseburgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through, or pop them in the oven at a low temperature. Use high-quality beef for the best flavor, and experiment with toppings and sauces.
