Ingredients
  

For the filling

  • 4 cups fresh apples, peeled and sliced Use crisp varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar Divided, use half in the filling and half in the batter.

For the batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can use gluten-free flour as a substitute.
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sugar Remaining sugar for the batter.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  • In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar. Arrange the apples in the greased baking dish.
  • In another bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well blended.
  • Pour the batter over the apples in the baking dish.

Baking

  • Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. You may also sprinkle extra cinnamon or chopped nuts on top for added flavor.
