We’ve shared plenty of cake recipes here and I have to say I’m always very excited to try all kinds of brand new, modern recipes that our readers are recommending. But every now and then I need to “get back to my roots” and bake a really traditional, old-fashioned cake. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s a chocolate cake, bundt cake or something in between, as long as the recipe is at least as old as I am (but let’s leave my age out of this, ahem).

I’m going to take a guess and say most of you remember hot milk sponge cake from a couple of decades ago – ok, maybe four decades, or five, but who’s counting? It’s something my mother and grandmother used to make very often, and I can totally understand why.
This is one of those cakes that works for pretty much any occasion. It’s easy to make and delicious on its own, which is why it’s the perfect cake for those days when you just want something sweet and tasty. But you can also layer it and turn it into the most amazing birthday cake with frosting.
