Why Make This Recipe

Making oxtails is a wonderful way to enjoy more affordable cuts of meat. Oxtails are known for their rich flavor and tender texture that develops after slow cooking. This recipe is perfect for those who want to impress guests or simply enjoy a memorable family meal. Plus, with minimal preparation, you can set your slow cooker and let it do all the work! The combination of barbecue sauce and seasonings creates a depth of flavor that truly elevates this dish.

How to Make Oxtails

Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs oxtails
  • 1 medium-sized yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp of my homemade BBQ rub/seasoning OR 2 tsp favorite store-bought BBQ seasoning
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 cups BBQ sauce
  • A desired amount of liquid smoke (I used a little over 1 tbsp)
  • 3 cups beef broth OR chicken broth OR water

Directions:

  1. Place the oxtails and chopped onions into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Drizzle the vegetable oil over the oxtails, making sure they are all nicely coated.
  3. Sprinkle the BBQ seasoning all over the oxtails, mixing well to ensure even coverage.
  4. Take the oxtails and onions, and place them into a large pot over medium-high heat.
  5. Brown the oxtails and onions for about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove the browned oxtails and onions from the pot and transfer them to the slow cooker.
  7. In the pot where you browned the oxtails, add the chicken broth or water.
  8. Pour in the barbecue sauce and liquid smoke, then mix everything together. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  9. Pour the barbecue sauce mixture over the oxtails in the slow cooker and cover with the lid.
  10. Cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  11. Serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

How to Serve Oxtails

Oxtails can be enjoyed in many ways. Serve them with fluffy rice, creamy mashed potatoes, or warm cornbread for a comforting meal. Pair them with your favorite vegetables, such as collard greens or roasted carrots, to create a well-rounded dinner. Drizzling extra barbecue sauce over the oxtails just before serving adds a nice touch.

How to Store Oxtails

Once cooked, let the oxtails cool down to room temperature. Place them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze them for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

Tips to Make Oxtails

  • Always brown the oxtails first for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Use a good quality barbecue sauce for the best results.
